Fourth Grade and their teachers, latest recipients of...
the Westtown School Sustainability Award - The Greenleaf Bowl
The Fourth Grade class and their classroom teachers, Bonnie Michael and Hilary Simons, with help from other Lower School teachers, created a stunning musical, “Westtown Goes Green” for their play this spring which highlighted all the ways that we as individuals and as a school can create a more sustainable society. Adapting a script from Bad Wolf Press, the class added several original songs and up-to-date information about Westtown’s efforts: energy conservation, bringing more local food to the dining room, recycling and composting systems, to name a few. One song had a verse in Spanish, exemplifying the innovative curriculum in Lower School that combines language instruction with organic gardening.
Students created inventive scenery and costumes to create the roles of human-sized fast food items, various electrical appliances, talking bananas and plastic water bottle giants, to name a few. The brilliant staging included rows of actors playing growing plants, a rap song, 36 air guitars in action at once, a three-part round, and other musical wonders. The humor throughout made it easy to embrace the powerful, essential message that we need to tread lightly on the earth and that we can still have fun doing so.
Fourth Grade is also working on a project to help reduce unwanted mail and paper waste on campus through the Catalog Canceling Campaign. Thank you, Fourth Grade students and faculty for making the green life compelling, joyful, and achievable.

150 in 50 Westtown Fund Challenge Achieved!
701 members of our community made a donation during the challenge helping us raise more than $158,000 in 50 days. The goal: raise $50,000 between April 1 and May 20th, and upon successful completion a group of generous donors gives an additional $50,000. Thank you to the 701 donors and to the funders of the challenge.
There is less than one month left in our fiscal year (ends June 30th) and we are now less than $100,000 from the overall goal of $1,200,000. We are 300 donors away from our participation goal of 2,915 donors. To support Westtown and join all our donors this year visit www.westtown.edu/wfdonate.
fresh from the farm
Are you hankering for a Westtown student-grown tomato this summer-- or basil, chard, lettuce, peppers, etc. etc? Well, lucky for you the Westtown Student Mini-Farm will be selling produce, weekly, throughout the summer.
On Wednesdays, 10-2 pm, out in front of the Meeting House, beginning June 13.
On Saturdays at the Thornton Farmer's Market (across the street from the post office) from 9-1, beginning June 16. Come on down and support student growing and local, chemical-free agriculture!
From Judy Asselin, Sustainability Coordinator:
Where we started: 20-25% of our campus waste was recycled in 2010.
Goal for 2012: 50% recycling rate
Progress to date (May): 40% recycling rate. We’re almost there!
The new sets of recycling/trash cans on campus, made from 100% recycled plastic lumber and recycled aluminum from a local PA company, will make it even easier to recycle. Please note we have SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING: all paper, plastic, glass, and metal can go into any recycling bin - even paper cups and paper plates (but not the hotdogs on them!)
Read all about sustainability at Westtown in Judy's blog, new this spring.
Bonus question: Not only is our recycling good for the environment, but guess how much we have saved since we started composting our food waste? $9,000 per year.
p-club at work
Upper School Youth Philanthropy Club Awards $3,400 in grants
Last week, the Philanthropy Club met to decide which organizations would benefit from their fundraising. Similarly to what others face when deciding where to give money, the Club had some difficult choices to make. The Club narrowed their choices to non-profits in areas of the environment, animals and human aid and then researched organizations. It took several meetings with excellent discussions to narrow the list down. This year’s worthy recipients are:
Main Line Animal Rescue
Plastic Pollution Coalition
For more on the Philanthropy Club and past recipients please visit www.westtown.edu/pclub. Email Johanna Coyle, Director of Annual Giving/Co-Faculty Advisor, with any questions or if you know of a non-profit that you think the Club should research.

alumni weekend 2012
What a glorious weekend, filled with indoor and outdoor activities, parties and reconnecting with old friends! Alumni traveled from near and far to join their classmates and to experience how the school has changed and the very important ways that it remains the same. Garrick Utley '57 gave a fascinating Keynote Speech and Eddie Montilla '77 performed a special musical piece (written just for the day!) at the Alumni Annual Meeting.
