rainforest cards benefit a rainforest
As part of their Rainforest studies, First Grade students collaborated to create three colorful murals which have now been printed as notecards. Proceeds from the sale of these cards will support The Children's Eternal Rainforest in Monteverde, Costa Rica, a 55,000-acre private preserve that is the largest in the country, and a testament to the change that can be accomplished by individual direct action.
The notecards are now on sale in the Lower School Office, the School Store, and at Pete's Produce. So far, students have raised $1,671 (including money earned doing chores).
Parents, teachers and First Graders have been counting, sorting, bundling and selling; the order form was generated by a parent as well. The original murals are on display in the Lower School.

senior play this weekend
Three actors, one ancient playwright, and 37 plays, all in under two hours. In this universally acclaimed theater experience first presented by the Reduced Shakespeare Company, the actors manage to compress the complete works of Shakespeare into about an hour and 40 minutes of high-speed over-the-top hilarity. Knowledge about Shakespeare's works is helpful, but not at all necessary. Suitable for all ages. Tonight and Saturday night, May 4-5, 8 pm in the Barton-Test Theater. All are welcome at this free event.

  report from robotics
Team 1391, aka the Metal Moose, traveled to St. Louis, MO to compete in the FIRST Nationals, after success in the Lenape District and Mid-Atlantic Regional competitions. This year's challenge, Rebound Rumble, required the team to design and build a robot which could accurately shoot a basketball at a target.
Team member Bo-Sung Kim '13 not only documented the team's season in photos, but she's also created a great video; what better way to see the Metal Moose in action! Thanks, Bo-sung!

 sign of the dragon
Middle and Upper School students in Mandarin classes were recently treated to a demonstration of Chinese calligraphy with expert Lii-Ying Chen. Chinese language teachers Hung-Chun Liu and Shu-Wan Peng invited the master artist to teach students about Chinese art, and to paint a dragon, since 2012 is the Year of the Dragon according to the Chinese astrological calendar.

meet the challenge countdown
We are well on our way to achieving our goal of $150,000 in 50 days. When our goal is met, a group of generous donors will give an additional $50,000. We are proud to see the outpouring of support from over 380 alumni, parents, students, grandparents, and friends of Westtown who have already contributed over $76,000 in the 150 in 50 Westtown Fund Spring Challenge.
We’re not there yet though—Westtown’s students, faculty/staff, and the 600-acre campus need your support. If you have not yet supported the challenge, we need your help. The challenge ends on May 20th. Please make a donation today.

reduce, reuse, recycle
How do we teach sustainabililty at Westtown? One of the best ways is for students to understand it so well they can teach it themselves! Synthesizing everything they'd learned about sustainability, Fourth Grade presented “A Night in the Arboretum” in honor of Earth Day.
In song and speech, the students gave great advice on how to live more sustainably by using the four R’s: Respect, Reclaim, Replant, Rethink. The play featured a rock band and 'Judy the Sustainability Queen,' plus enchanted plastic bottles, banana skins, light bulbs, even a rusted SUV, which come to life and sing.
Original lyrics were written by students and teachers for ‘The Donation Song,’ ‘Leave Your Car in the Garage,’ and ‘Palmo a Palmo’ (“inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow...”). Fourth graders built sets, made costumes, created props and learned lines. A stellar effort!
